Mais uma banda daqui do Brasil, de São Paulo mais precisamente. Stoner mais direto, pesado e gritado. A banda tem uma química muito boa e ótimas composições. Me lembra um pouco o Hermano. Mais umas das excelentes bandas que tem aparecido desde 2000 e que, por motivos obscuros, não tocam na rádio. Vai entender. Top 3: "Bail Out", "Vasalube"e "The Outsider". Another great brazilian band, sounding more like Goldfish Memories. Sometimes they remind me John Garcia's Hermano. Unfortunately, they're not playing in your radio. Fu Manchu - [2004] Start The Machine

Eu semprei falei mal do Fu Manchu, sempre achei uma banda superestimada no genero (porém, de importância subestimada no rock em geral). Mas tenho que dar o braço a torcer. Esse Start The Machine é muito bom! Direto, sem firula, parece feito pra se ouvir no carro (capa sugestiva). Me curvo em humildade diante do poderoso Fu Manchu. Top 3: "Written In Stone", "I'm Getting Away" e "It's All The Same". Pra quem gosta de: Nebula, Demon Cleaner, Waxy, Alabama Thunderpussy e Solarized.

Fu Manchu never sound that good to me and I always thought that they're too overrated in their genre (but too underrated in rock in general). But now I'm start to think a little different. Start the Machine is so good! Very rocker and straight to the point, it's just great to listen in your car, drivin fast to somewhere. I've had recognize the power of the mighty Fu Manchu now. Che - [2000] Sounds Of Liberation

Tudo que o Brant Bjork faz é legal e esse projeto dele é um dos meus preferidos. Tudo é bem simples e direto e acho que ele consegue alcançar uma harmonia entre a voz dele e os timbres de guitarra que é difícil achar por aí. Che lembra o trabalho dele com os Bros e os Operators e tem uma levada bem Queens Of The Stone Age, especialmente em "The Knife". Muito bom mesmo esse aqui, legal pra ouvir a qualquer hora. Everything that Brant Bjork does is cool. Che is one of my favorite Brant's projects. The rhythms and the guitars are something very special here and, like all of his work, the way this man sings is so cool. Brant did, as usual, a nice shot with this one. Buffalo - [2003] Temporada de Huracanes

O maior expoente do stoner rock argentino junto com o Los Natas. Ótimo disco, cheio de vinhetas e músicas bemprafrentex. Mais direto-ao-assunto do que o Los Natas, muitas vezes lembrando uma mistura de Fu Manchu com Queens Of The Stone Age, o que significa que a banda é boa. O rock argentino vive me surpreendendo e o raro é achar uma banda ruim por lá. Pra escutar alto esse. Top 3: "Rio Arriba", "Pescando En La Marea" e "Angel De Las Espinas". Pra quem gosta de: Los Natas, Dragonauta, Fu Manchu, Kyuss e Queens Of The Stone Age.

Buffalo shares with Los Natas the throne of The Best Argentinian Stoner Rock Band, in my humble opinion. This album brings some straight-ahead cuts mixed with some little intermissions that put some charm in this record. They are some kind of wierd son of Fu Manchu and Queens Of The Stone Age, which means that they're good. Bands from Argentina are always a great surprise and with Buffalo is the same. Listen loud! Top 3: "Rio Arriba", "Pescando En La Marea" and "Angel De Las Espinas". For those who likes: Los Natas, Dragonauta, Fu Manchu, Kyuss e Queens Of The Stone Age.

Atomic Bitchwax - [1999] I

Esse é pra quem gosta muito do Ed Mundell. Excelente guitarrista. As vezes o som é muito jam, mas era uma otima banda com essa formação. Com a saída do Mundell, eu acho que eles ficaram um pouco comuns demais. Enfim, ouçam... Top 3: "Hey Alright", "Hope You Die" e "Shit Kicker". Eu sei, MQN num é lá das coisas mais stoner que existem, mas eles tem um pézinho no estilo. Coloquei eles aqui por que eles são a minha banda nacional favorita no momento. Kyuss - [1991] Wretch

Os papas, os deuses, os mestres do tal do stoner rock (ou sei lá o quê). Tá certo que aqui eles ainda não eram aquela maravilhosa banda que eles vieram a ser a partir do "Blues For The Red Sun" , mas já dava pra ver que eles tinham ótimas composições. A produção que num ajuda muito, o que prova que o Chris Goss foi um peça chave no som da banda. Nessa época o John Garcia num era também o grande vocal em que ele se transformou no disco posterior, mas "Son Of A Bitch" já mostrava do que ele era capaz. Top 3: "Son Of A Bitch" , "Katzenjammer" and "I'm Not". Pra quem gosta de: Nebula, Black Sabbath, Fu Manchu, Slo Burn e Soundgarden (do Ultramega OK).

The godfathers of stoner/desert rock (or something like that). Well, at this time, they weren't that big band that they become after "Blues For The Red Sun", but the compositions were very solid. The production is the problem here and this is a prove that Chris Goss was important to the band's sound like any of the other members. And John Garcia wasn't the great singer that he become but in "Son Of A Bitch" he shows what he could do with a mic. Top 3: "Son Of A Bitch" , "Katzenjammer" and "I'm Not". For those who likes: Nebula, Black Sabbath, Fu Manchu, Slo Burn and Soundgarden (Ultramega OK era).

Spirit Caravan - [1999] Jug Fulla Sun

Impressionante como uma boa banda começa por um nome. Quando baixei esse disco, baixei só por que simpatizei com o nome. Num fazia a menor idéia do tipo de música contida no disco. Pra minha agradável surpresa, o conteúdo é tão bom quanto o nome. Eu sei que o Wino Wenrich já havia escrito o nome dele na história do rock muito antes disso aqui com o The Obsessed e o Saint Vitus, mas pra mim, o Spirit Caravan é uma mistura de algumas das minhas bandas preferidas: Alice In Chains ("Lost Sun Dance"), Soundgarden ("Courage"), Motörhead ("Fang"), Led Zeppelin ("Chaw") e, claro, Black Sabbath por quase todo o disco. É uma pena que o Wino tenha uma dificuldade enorme em se manter em uma banda por mais de 10 minutos. Vamos ver se agora ele dá uma parada e engrena no projeto solo dele. Top 3: "Courage", "Jug Fulla Sun" e "Lost Sun Dance". Pra quem gosta de: Black Sabbath, The Obsessed, Goatsnake, Alice In Chains e Danzig.

It's amazing how a good name grabs your attention. When I saw a band called Spirit Caravan, i've just downloaded without know what their are about. Didn't know that is one of thousands Wino Weinrich's projects. And it's just incredible. Well, before this record, Wino has his name in the pantheon of rock gods because his works with The Obsessed and Saint Vitus but, for me, Spirit Caravan is his most valuable work. Mainly because sometimes sounds like a collection of my favorite bands in one record: Alice In Chains ("Lost Sun Dance"), Soundgarden ("Courage"), Motörhead ("Fang"), Led Zeppelin ("Chaw") and, course, the all mighty Black Sabbath overall the record. Unfortunately, it's sad that Wino can put a project for more thant 10 minutes without leaving it. Hope he settle down in his new solo career or with Saint Vitus reunion. Top 3: "Courage", "Jug Fulla Sun" and "Lost Sun Dance". For those who likes: Black Sabbath, The Obsessed, Goatsnake, Alice In Chains and Danzig.

Nebula - [2003] Atomic Ritual

Esse é classico! Do começo ao fim. Acho que se fizessemos uma discografia basica do tal do stoner rock (ou qualquer um desses rótulos), Atomic Ritual entra com certeza. Eddie Glass é um guitarrista muito, mas muito bom. Na verdade ele num faz nada que já não tenha sido feito antes, mas nem por isso deixa de ser ótimo. Pra quem gosta de umas doideras viajantes tem "Atomic Ritual", pra quem curte um refrãozinha pegajoso tem "Carpe Diem" e pra quem gosta de guitarra no sentido sujo da coisa, tem o disco inteiro. Clássico que eu espero que todos já tenham ouvido. Se num ouviu ainda, aproveita! Top 3: "So It Goes", "Carpe Diem" e "Out Of Your Head". This one is classic! From the minute that starts 'till the last second of the album. Basic stoner rock (or whatelse) discography, for sure. Unfortunately, Eddie Glass is so underrated. Anyway, this record has everything:"Atomic Ritual" for those who likes spacy guitars, "Carpe Diem" for the ones who love catchy riffs and all the album is for the guitar lovers, for sure. Sleep - [1993] Sleep's Holly Moutain

Vou chover no molhado: é impossível ouvir "Dragonaut" sem pensar no Sabbath. Só quando o vocal entra que a ficha cai e ai a gente descobre que não é o Ozzy cantando em 1970. Talvez a banda que mais bebeu na fonte de Birminghan. A diferença é que o som é muito mais sujo e o vocal muito mais arrastado. Claro que tudo isso é proposital. Num sou muito fã desse estilo mais doom não, mas o Sleep faz tudo muito bem do começo ao fim. Clássico do genero. Top 3: "Dragonaut", "Aquarian" e "Holly Moutain". Pra quem gosta de: Black Sabbath, Electric Wizard, High On Fire, Melvins e Saint Vitus.

There is nothing new in listen "Dragonaut" and imediately think that is a unknown Sabbath song. Only when vocals enter the song and you realize that is not Ozzy singing that you find that is Sleep playing. The only difference it that Sleep's sound is way more dirty and fuzzy. Of course that it's happening to creat an identity in their sound. I'm not a big fan of those doom bands, but Sleep is one of them that I can easily enjoy. Top 3: "Dragonaut", "Aquarian" and "Holly Moutain". Pra quem gosta de: Black Sabbath, Electric Wizard, High On Fire, Melvins and Saint Vitus.

Goldfish Memories - [2007] Goldfish Memories EP

Facinho uma das melhores do Brasil no momento. Quer dizer, faz tempo que não tenho noticias deles, então nem sei se eles ainda estão na ativa. Enfim, vamos falar do som. É a tipica banda que não tem nada de especial, o vocal num é maravilhoso, o guitarrista num é um deus, nem a cozinha é espetacular. Mas, sei lá por quê, num tem nada fora do lugar. Tudo parece milimetricamente calculado no som deles e a execução é perfeita! Fora que as músicas são ótimas e muito, mas muito pegajosas, principalmente "Rise Above The Flame". Mais ou menos que nem o Dozer: num tem nada de novo e diferente, mas é tão bom, mas tão bom que até cansa. Goiania é a méca do rock brasileiro! Top 3: "Alcoholic Juice" , "Rise Above The Flame" e "Tricks". Pra quem gosta de: Fu Manchu, Dozer, Black Drawing Chalks, Flamin' Moe e Nebula.

One of the best brazilian bands at this moment. Well, to be honest, it's been a long time since I hearded about them. Don't know if they are still active but, well, it doesn't matter. Talking about their sound, they are one of those bands that sounds like a million others but, they're still fabulous anyway. There is nothing special in their sound but it's so well done that it's impossible to not enjoy a little at least. Catchy riffs and a very good production is what we have here. It's just not fair that they aren't in brazilian mainstream music right now. Anyway, they rocked! And that is what really matter here. Listen loud! Clutch - [1999] Jam Room

Clutch é uma banda que eu sempre estranhei e nunca dei muita chance. Mas depois que ouvi esse disco, parece que a cada vez que eu ouço algo deles, eu gosto mais e mais. O vocal do Neil Fallon é muito legal assim como as guitarras do Tim Slut. Gosto deles por que as vezes eles soam como uma mistura de Faith No More e Lynyrd Skynyrd, mas sem soar datado. Esse disco tem um clima bem blues rock, além de umas coisas funkeadas. Ouvi o novo deles (Strange Cousins From The West) e adorei do começo ao fim. Acho que esse "Jam Room" é o ponto chave pra quem quer gostar da banda. Os barbudos mais legais do rock (bléh Los Hermanos)! Top 3: "Big Fat Pig", "Gnome Enthusiast" e "Swampt Boot Upside Down". Pra quem gosta de: Faith No More, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Gov't Mule, Alabama Thunderpussy e Fireball Ministry.

I didn't like Clutch the first time I listen to it. But since I listened to this album, I've started to like them more and more. Neil Fallon's is so charismatic and guitar player Tim Slut is so underrated, unfortunately. Don't know why, but sometimes they sound to me like they are some kind of Lynyrd Skynyrd mixed with the Faith No More freak-out style. I've hearded their last album yesterday (Strange Cousins From The West) and they still sound great. Anyway, I think that "Jam Room" is perfect if you want to know and, them, love this band. Enjoy! Boris - [2003] Akuma No Uta

Só a primeira musica, "Introduction", já vale o disco. Num é exatamente uma música, é apenas uma guitarra sendo tocada repetidamente com a distorção no talo de um jeito bem lento. Nada de mais. Mas sei lá por quê, é MUITO legal! Daí pra frente, eles tocam de verdade e o som não decepciona. O Japão tem mostrado boas bandas do genêro. O Boris, junto com o Green Machine, é a mais legal. Eu num sou muito chegado nas coisas mais drone deles, mas esse disco é bom do começo ao fim. Tudo gravado em apenas um take!!! Sujo e pesado, como deve ser. Top 3: "Ibitsu", "Furi" e "Akuma No Uta". Pra quem gosta de: Melvins, Kyuss, Green Machine, Flower Travelin' Band e Goatsnake.

The first song, "Introduction", make this album worth the listen. It's not exactly a song, It's just Wata playing her guitar with lots of distortion in a very relaxing way. Nothing special but, it's just awesome! After 9 minutes, the record really starts to rock. Really starts to rock. Boris and Green Machine are the best japanese rock bands at this moment I think. I'm not into their drone records, but this one together with "Smile" and "Heavy Rocks" is my favorite. And It's was record in just one take! Dirty and heavy as should be. Top 3: "Ibitsu", "Furi" and "Akuma No Uta". For those who likes: Melvins, Kyuss, Green Machine, Flower Travelin' Band and Goatsnake.

Dozer - [2005] Through The Eyes Of Heathens

Essa banda é lá da Suécia e apesar do som stoner, eu acho que eles tem um "quêzinho" de Soundgarden. "Drawing Dead" seria uma música do Audioslave fácil, fácil. Dozer é uma das minhas descobertas mais legais desses ultimos tempos. Tem desde um som mais direto até aquelas viagens meio Monster Magnet. Um dos meus preferidos do genêro. Apesar da capa, eles são muito machos, hehehe. Top 3; "Drawing Dead" , "From Fire Hell" e "Man Of Fire". Pra quem gosta de: Soundgarden, Unida, Beaver, Kyuss e Monster Magnet.

Fatso Jetson - [1999] Flames For All

A história do Stoner Rock e do Mario Lalli, guitarra e vocal do Fatso Jetson meio que se confundem. Ele divide com Josh Homme, Chris Goss e Dave Wyndorf o posto de "rei" da coisa. O som do Fatso Jetson é bem jam, cheio de texturas e uma pegada espacial. Esse é o unico disco da discografia deles a contar com quatro integrantes na formação. Recomendado para guitarristas. Stoner Rock and Mario Lalli's (g,v) history is almost the same. Is impossible to know who came first. With Homme, Goss and Wyndorf, Mario Lalli is one of the kings of Stoner Rock. Fatso Jetson is a stoner version of a jam band with songs full of textures and spacy sounds. Recomended to guitar players. Goatsnake - [2000] Dog Days

Pra começar vamos de Goatsnake. Esse EP é curto, direto e absurdamente legal. Principalmente a cover de "Heartbreaker" do Free. A voz do Pete Stahl me lembra a do Anthony Kieds as vezes, só que muito mais legal. Graves no talo com muita melodia com vocais rasgados é o que se encontra nessa perola aqui. Não conheço muito da discografia deles, mas esse EP é uma paulada! Top 3: "Long Gone", "Heartbreaker" e "Man Of Light". Pra quem gosta de: Dozer, Beaver, Truckfighters, Kyuss e The Obsessed.

Let's start with this fantastic EP by Goatsnake. Straight, raw and very heavy, this record shines all over it's lenght, mainly on Free's cover "Heartbreaker". Pete Stahl voice is amazing and sometimes remind me Anthony Kieds voice, but much better! I don't know then a lot, but this EP is a punch right in the nuts. Top 3: "Long Gone", "Heartbreaker" and "Man Of Light". For those who likes: Dozer, Beaver, Truckfighters, Kyuss and The Obsessed.

Julho/July Stoner Rock

Bom, to saindo de férias e num tenho nada de bom pra fazer. Então eu decidi postar um disco por dia, só que só de stoner rock. De 1 a 31 de julho, eu vou postar meus discos preferidos ou aqueles que tenho curiosidade de conhecer do genêro. É difícil delimitar o que é e o que não é stoner, se é que existe o tal Stoner Rock, mas acho que no final, tudo vai ficar bem relacionado. Obvio que um monte de ótimas bandas não vão entrar como Orange Goblin, Yawning Man, Throttlerod, Dixie Witch, Colour Haze, Solarized, Green Machine, Karma To Burn, Cathedral, Bongzilla, The Obssessed, St. Vitus, Hidden Hand, Glasspack, sHEAVY, Earthling, Spiritual Beggars, Alabama Thunderpussy, Wolfmother, Fireball Ministry, Acid King, etc. Difícil escolher 31 nomes. Tentei incluir uns brasileiros e argentinos também. Pra falar a verdade, num tem nada de muito diferente do óbvio. Eu só estou sem ter o que fazer :P

Finally I will have my vacation and, well, I don't have nothing to do. So, I decided to do something different. In July, I'm going to post one stoner rock album a day. Some of them are the ones that I really love, some others I just want to listen because every blog that I go, I see people saying that Electric Wizard or Sleep is fantastic. To be honest, I never give them a chance, so I think that is going to be interesting to listen all those bands in this month and share my thoughts about them. Of course, some bands will not enter the list like Orange Goblin, Yawning Man, Throttlerod, Dixie Witch, Colour Haze, Solarized, Green Machine, Karma To Burn, Cathedral, Bongzilla, The Obssessed, St. Vitus, Hidden Hand, Glasspack, sHEAVY, Earthling, Spiritual Beggars, Alabama Thunderpussy, Wolfmother, Fireball Ministry, Acid King, etc. So, is hard to choose 31 names, but I do my best. I'll include some brazilian and argentinian bands to. Anyway, there is nothing different in this bands, all of them are very known. But, I don't have nothing better to do, so....

Skid Row - [1995] Subhuman Race

Todo mundo fala que o Skid Row é metal farofa e tals, mas eu acho que num é bem por ai. Pra mim, eles foram uma banda de hard rock bem respeitável nos anos 80 e começo de 90. Perdem só pro Guns N' Roses, mas aí já é covardia, ehhehe. Gosto desse disco, principalmente por causa de "Breakin' Down", que pra mim é uma música impar na discografia da banda. Top 3: "My Enemy", "Beat Yourself Blind" e "Breakin' Down". Pra quem gosta de: Velvet Revolver, Guns N' Roses, Buckcherry, Kiss e Ted Nugent.

Everybody says that Skid Row is a hair metal band, but I just don't think so. They are just a good hard rock band to me. Well, not like GNR, but they deserve the second place in the late 80's. Maybe not, I don't know. Like this record mainly because "Breakin' Down", which is one of their most different tracks. Top 3: "My Enemy", "Beat Yourself Blind" and "Breakin' Down". For those who likes: Velvet Revolver, Guns N' Roses, Buckcherry, Kiss and Ted Nugent.

Death - [2009] ...For The Whole World To See

Não confundam com o Death, banda americana de Death Metal. Essa aqui é outra história. Rock de Detroit dos anos 70 que nunca tinha visto a luz do dia, até agora! Bom disco. Num muda a vida de ninguém, mas é uma boa audição. Top 3: "Keep On Knocking", "Rock N' Roll Victim" e "You're A Prisioner". Pra quem gosta de: MC5, Stooges, The Clash, The Sonics e Bad Brains.

Do not confuse this Death with death metal Death from Florida. This one is from Detroit of 70's. Recorded in 1974, this album never saw the light of day 'till now. Great guitars and vocals by the Hackney's brothers. Top 3: "Keep On Knocking", "Rock N' Roll Victim" and "You're A Prisioner". for those who likes: MC5, Stooges, The Clash, The Sonics and Bad Brains.
